Suman Sorg, FAIA Launches New NFP Architecture Firm
WASHINGTON, February 2, 2021 – Award-winning, internationally known architect and designer, Suman Sorg, FAIA, has formed the non-profit design firm A Complete Unknown in Washington, D.C. Its mission: to promote social justice, peace, and unity through problem-solving, architecture, and design. With an initial focus on providing shelter for refugees, the homeless, and low-income families, the organization is committed to creating spaces that foster social equity and dignity, restoration of nature, and animal welfare.
Over 30 years spent building a successful architecture firm known for quality and design excellence, Ms. Sorg has gained deep experience in design for the underserved. Some projects include the complete renovation and updating of Anacostia High School in D.C., the John and Jill Ker Conway Residence for formerly homeless veterans, and the innovative Southern Regional Technology and Recreation Center, serving the community of Fort Washington.
She has also completed projects in more than 30 countries throughout North America, South America, Eastern and Western Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. In addition to project work, the firm’s leaders have been active in the community, including Sorg, who is a former trustee of the National Building Museum and serves on several boards including Zocalo Public Square.
Ms. Sorg’s passion comes from profound personal experience. She states, “As someone who was born in a refugee camp, I am acutely aware of the needs and struggles of the disenfranchised and how design can play a pivotal role in the growth and development of all people, no matter their situation.”
Joining Sorg at A Complete Unknown, is Director Brandon S. Peters, PLA who brings a wide range of experience in North America, Africa and Asia. In addition to staff who live in the region, the office collaborates with developers, other design firms, NGOs, and foundations to tackle projects worldwide. These include: shelter, medical, and support facilities for refugees; affordable housing and housing for the homeless; community, civic, educational, and cultural facilities for the disadvantaged; and commercial and office facilities for disadvantaged and non-profit businesses.
“At this stage in my career, I have turned my sights to projects that advance the basic tenants of humanity, such as compassion, love, and a pledge to nonviolence towards all– humans, animals, and nature,” said Ms. Sorg. “Washington, D.C. – being at the center of the federal government – allows us to play a critical role in affecting and informing policy. There is so much that each of us can do using our energy, experience, and talent to support those at risk, both locally and around the world.”
