Affordable Housing

Years of underfunding and a lack of attention have created a housing affordability and availability crisis throughout the United States. Though particularly acute in major urban centers and larger cities, the problem of affordable housing and living spaces exists across the nation and globe. The COVID-19 pandemic has swelled the number of unemployed and low-wage workers, low-income residents, and low-income families, many of whom will struggle to afford rent in the long term. Among other solutions and development goals, a significant ramp-up in federal housing, state housing, and local programs building housing is needed to avert a social and humanitarian crisis.

Lack of affordable housing, including high-cost – relative to income – and inferior-quality rental housing, has been linked to numerous negative social outcomes, including ill health, decreased life expectancy, inferior education, and lower incomes. There also is a racial aspect to these housing disparities— in 2018, 31% of Black renter households were severely burdened (i.e., their housing costs exceed 50 percent of income), compared with 21 percent of their White counterparts. We believe that quality and affordable housing should be a right.
