Housing for the Homeless

What is a home? More than simply a roof over one’s head. Home is a place for everyday life, relaxation, and relief from the pressures of the outside world. The needs of homeless individuals seeking shelter are no different from yours or ours. Whether short term shelter or long term facilityEmergency Shelter or Permanent Supportive Housing, everyone needs a safe place with dignity, privacy, and comfort.

Our design approach, when working on projects to serve those without shelter, remains rooted in empathy and respect and is guided by a focus on the effect of designed spaces on the totality of the lived experienced of those interacting with the facility.

Homeless individuals can have a range of special needs, and this vulnerable population deserves a home that supports their whole health. Sorg has extensive experience designing facilities for users with special needs. We understand the difficult circumstances in which homeless individuals find themselves. We work to create spaces that foster a sense of belonging, promote equity and dignity, and reduces stress. As many shelter guests  or permanent supportive housing residents transitioning out of homelessness may struggle with their physical or mental health, PTSD, recent trauma, addiction or other challenges, our decision making is guided by wellness strategies including biophilic design and trauma- informed design. Our hope is that the architecture will provide an environment to help alleviate the acute condition of homelessness by creating living spaces that feel like home.
