Public Architecture

Public buildings, including community centers, libraries, recreation centers, museums and municipal and civic buildings, form a substantial portion of our work and is a practice area that is very special to us because of their wide impact and potential for engendering civic and cultural ideals within spaces open to the public. Engaging in the design of civic and cultural buildings allows us to work with public sector and institutional partners to try to heal past injustice and inequality and to build public spaces imbued with dignity and respect for all people and for the environment.

Our work in public architecture ranges widely from large scale Federal Government facilities to neighborhood recreation centers, but in many ways our approach is the same. We develop our planning and design concepts from the unique extended context of each project –

  • site
  • climate
  • culture
  • community
  • client program

We have an enduring commitment to create buildings that are inspirational and functional, that foster social justice, peace and unity. We believe there is a ripple effect from these projects which extends far beyond the building itself and out into the community to improve quality of life and to serve as catalysts to revitalize the neighborhoods around them.
